11 year old British composer Alma Deutscher is set to have her first full length opera premiered in Vienna in December.
Entitled ‘Cinderella Opera’ and commissioned by conductor Zubin Mehta, the 2 hour work is set in an opera house in the imaginary country of ‘Transylvanian’.
Alma composed her first full piano sonata at age 6 – and has already to date composed 9 concertos for violin and orchestra.
She started composing the opera “way back when she was 8”, she has indicated.
“I heard the music before I knew she was 11 … I was really quite shocked,” production soprano, Anna Voshege has said.
“Some of the nuances in the music are really very special, very intricate,” she has said.
The opera will take place at the Casino Baumgarten, in Vienna from December 29 to January 5th.
