Adam Hickox Named as Chief Conductor of Norway's Trondheim Symphony
The 28-year-old will step into the role from Fall 2025
The 28-year-old British conductor Adam Hickox has been appointed as the new Chief Conductor of Norway's Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and Opera (TSO). Hickox made his debut with the orchestra just a few months ago, on August 3, 2024 — and his new appointment begins in Fall 2025.
Hickox is presently the Principal Conductor of the Glyndebourne Sinfonia, having been appointed in December 2023.
In the 2024/25 season he will make debuts at the Staatsoper Hamburg (Hänsel und Gretel), Dresdner Philharmonie, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Deutsche Radiophilharmonie, London Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National, Bournemouth Symphony orchestras, Orchestre National de Lille, Trondheim Symphony, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.
He has previously served as Assistant Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic (2019-2022), where he worked closely with Lahav Shani. In 2021, he was one of two Conducting Fellows at Tanglewood Festival.
Hickox studied music and composition with Robin Holloway at the University of Cambridge and then continued his conducting studies with Sian Edwards at the Royal Academy of Music. He is the son of conductor Sir Richard Hickox.
"We look forward to this new and exciting chapter with Adam Hickox as our Chief Conductor," said Anne Kathrine Slungård, TSO Director. "We are eager to elevate TSO to new artistic heights together and to inspire our audience. Welcome to Trondheim, Adam!"
"My first experience of collaborating with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra felt truly electric," Hickox said. "The chemistry was immediate, and the performance of Verdi’s Requiem left a profound impression on me. Therefore, I’m delighted to have been asked to take on the role of Chief Conductor."
"Together we will explore a great variety of repertoire and aim to give audiences unforgettable experiences, whilst continuing to deepen our relationship to the community. In a world where we need the expressive power of music more than ever, it is the greatest privilege to now call these brilliant musicians my colleagues. For fremtiden og alle mulighetene som ligger foran oss! (To the future and all the opportunities that lie ahead of us!)"
