Adelphi Quartet to Disband After 7 Years
The players say they wish to "pursue individual musical journeys"
Europe's Adelphi Quartet has announced that after seven years of performing together, its players have decided to part ways. Formed in 2017 at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, the group comprises Maxime Michaluk and Esther Agustí Matabosch (violins), Adam Newman (viola), and Nepomuk Braun (Germany).
The group initially studied together with the Hagen Quartet, and also received teaching from artists such as Eberhard Feltz, Valentin Erben, Jonathan Brown, and György Kurtág. They are the winners of the Wigmore Hall Competition, the Premio Paolo Borciani, and the competition of the Irene Steels-Wilsing Foundation as part of the String Quartet Festival of the Heidelberger Frühling.
In 2021, the quartet was successful at the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) auditions, and its players have received support from YCAT since that time.
The group has appeared at Wigmore Hall, the Fundación Juan March in Madrid, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, and the Aldeburgh Festival, as well as at the Summer Music Days Hitzacker, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Berlin Philharmonic, Flagey in Brussels, the Music Days Mondsee, Schloss Esterhazy, the Paris Philharmonic, and the International Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg.
"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the end of an era for us as the Adelphi Quartet," the group wrote in a statement. "After seven unforgettable years of music-making, we’ve made the decision to part ways and pursue individual musical journeys."
"We want to thank every single person who has supported us along the way — to our ever-attentive audience, whose presence fueled our energy and to our mentors, whose endless inspiration made us love exploring the string quartet repertoire. Our gratitude also goes to the entire YCAT Trust team for their support throughout this journey, and to all the promoters and managers who believed in us and gave us so many wonderful opportunities. Lastly, to our beloved colleagues, friends, and families — your encouragement has meant the world to us, and we are deeply grateful for the incredible experiences we've shared together."
"Here’s to new beginnings!"
