Australian violin virtuoso Alma Moodie died on this day in 1943 – aged just 44.

Widely regarded as one of Europe's foremost soloists during the inter-war years, Ms Moodie premiered a number of important works – including concerti by Kurt Atterberg, Hans Pfitzner and Ernst Krenek.

Legendary pedagogue Carl Flesch once wrote, "... amongst all the pupils in my course I liked Alma Moodie best."

She tragically took her own life during an air raid in Frankfurt - and left no known recording legacy.
