Applications Open to Washington's Centrum Chamber Music Workshop
Two string quartets will be invited to a week of coaching with the American Quartet and pianist Lucinda Carver
Founded in 2015 in Port Townsend, Washington, the Centrum Chamber Music Workshop fosters the highest level of training and coaching for pre-professional chamber musicians. Created for emerging, pre-formed ensembles, the program chooses two string quartets to participate in a week of coaching with its world-renowned faculty. This year, the two groups will be coached by the American Quartet and Centrum's Artistic Director Lucinda Carver.
Admission to the workshop is merit-based and each participant is awarded a full scholarship — including tuition, travel, accommodations, and meals.
During the week-long workshop, each group will appear in a public masterclass on Thursday, June 8th and in a student showcase concert on June 9 and 10.
The application deadline is April 30. To apply, click here.
Centrum's faculty quartet-in-residence, the American Quartet celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2019. The ensemble has performed in all fifty states and has appeared in the most important concert halls worldwide. The group’s presentations of the complete quartets of Beethoven, Schubert, Schoenberg, Bartók, and Mozart have won widespread critical acclaim. Additionally, their MusicMasters Complete Mozart String Quartets, performed on a quartet set of instruments by Stradivarius, are widely considered to have set the standard for this repertoire.
Artistic Director Lucinda Carver is the former Professor of Piano at the USC Thornton School of Music, where she also served as Vice Dean of the Division of Classical Performance. She is currently interim Executive Director at the Boston Conservatory of Music at Berklee. Carver has appeared as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Pacific Symphony — and at prestigious chamber music festivals across the United States and in Europe.
Past workshop participants have included students from Curtis, The Juilliard School, Eastman, USC, Indiana University, Rice, CIM, and the New World Symphony.
In addition to its Chamber Music Workshop, Centrum hosts the Centrum Chamber Music Series, which will welcome chamber music ensembles to the Joseph F. Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park. VC Artist Dover Quartet will perform in the series on April 10, while the American Quartet will play on June 11.
