Winner of the 2024 Joseph Joachim International Competition, 20-year-old VC Artist and Violinist Jacques Forestier began playing the violin at the age of two and has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia. Hailed by CBC Music as one of the “Top 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30,” Jacques has performed with the Edmonton Symphony, NDR Radiophilharmonie, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Western Michigan Symphony, among others, and looks forward to appearing in the coming seasons with the Dresden, Bremen, and Duisburg philharmonics, the Potsdam & Württembergisches chamber orchestras, the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra, Staatskapelle Karlsruhe, reappearing with the NDR Radiophilharmonie, as well as performing at chamber music and concert venues across Europe such as the Cologne Philharmonie among others.

Jacques made his début at the age of 11 with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at the Winspear Centre and has since been re-invited regularly as a soloist.

In addition to winning the 1st Prize, laureate prize, and audience prize at the 2024 Joseph Joachim International Competition in Hannover, Germany, the Warner Classics Label will be working with Jacques to produce and promote his début album.

A recipient of the Thomas. D Watkins Fellowship at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Jacques is a student of Shmuel Ashkenasi and Pamela Frank. He is the laureate of several international competitions including the Stulberg, Klein, Johansen, OSM Manulife, and Shean competitions.

Jacques is grateful for the support of many and would like to thank the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Anne Burrows Foundation for their generosity in supporting his growth as a musician.

What are your hobbies outside of music? 
I love food almost too much. I try to eat out as much as possible as a "reward" once I get everything done that I need to during the week. Seafood, steak, sushi, Greek, good Italian food, my list could go on. Other than eating, I love spending time with friends and sleeping. 
If you were not a musician, what profession do you feel you'd be doing now? 
I absolutely would be a food critic. I enjoy writing and as we have very much established, I love food, so combining the two would be the closest most rewarding thing in life to being a musician. 
What would your dream gig be?
Of course, performing a concerto, in my case like Dvorak or Sibelius, with the Berlin Philharmonic would be any aspiring-soloist's dream; however, for me, I would be over the moon to perform some chamber music at one of Europe's great concert venues such as Wigmore or Konzerthaus Berlin ...specifically with some of my favourite musicians — Brahms Sextet with my beloved teacher Pam comes to mind first. 
What is a song that makes you turn the radio up? 
Anything and everything Nat King Cole. 
What would you say makes you unique as a musician? 
Well, what I would like to think I succeed at is always to the best of my ability honouring the composer by trying to completely decode what I see in the score and giving every single element of the music some kind of purpose based on those discoveries. I really believe strongly that is our duty as musicians. 
Do you keep all 3 meals phone-free? No social media scrolling.
Absolutely not if I'm alone, in fact I use meals as an opportunity to send and reply to emails and messages, but if I am in the company of others I will refrain naturally.
