Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Appoints New Solo Cellist
Till Schuler won the job after serving in the orchestra's academy
24-year-old German cellist Till Schuler will be the Principal Cellist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since May 2024, Schuler has held an academy position within the orchestra, alongside 18 other young musicians.
Born in Stuttgart, Schuler first began cello lessons at age four with Lisa Neßling, before pursuing further studies with Valentin Radutiu at the HMT Rostock and then at the HfMT Hamburg with Prof. Sebastian Klinger.
In 2020, he was accepted as a scholarship student at the German National Academic Foundation, and at the Yehudi Menuhin-founded charity Live Music Now in Hamburg. In 2021, he received the First Prize at the Gustav Mahler Cello Competition — as well as the special prize of the jury chair.
Schuler made his solo debut with the Paulusorchester Stuttgart in early 2014, following this with appearances with the Young Chamber Orchestra Stuttgart and the Stuttgart and Waiblingen Chamber Orchestras in the Liederhalle Stuttgart, Venice, and Australia.
In 2021, he appeared as a soloist in the Dvořák Cello Concerto with the Felix Mendelssohn Orchestra, in the Leiszhalle.
Schuler plays on an 1840 Georges Chanot cello, on loan to him through the generosity of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.
"Fantastic news and another great success for my former HfMT Hamburg student Till Schuler, currently a member of the BRSO Academy, for winning the audition for the solo cello position in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra!" wrote Prof. Sebastian Klinger on social media. "Bravo, dear Till!"
