Benjamin Britten‘s Violin Concerto Op. 15 was premiered on this day in 1940 – 77 years ago.

The first performance was given by Spanish virtuoso Antonio Brosa with the New York Philharmonic – conducted by Sir John Barbirolli.

It’s believed Britten took inspiration and structure from Prokofiev’s 1st Violin Concerto.
