Danish Composer Awarded 2018 $100,000 Grawemeyer Composition Prize
59 year old Danish composer Bent Sørensen has been announced as the 2018 recipient of the prestigious USD $100,000 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition – for his violin, cello and piano triple concerto, ‘L’isola della Città’.
The winning work was premiered with the Danish ensemble Trio con Brio and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen in January 2016.
"It is not a virtuoso showcase, but rather integrates the soloists smoothly into an ever-evolving orchestral texture … although it has its larger moments, on the whole it is one of the gentler, more introspective winners of this award," Award Director Marc Satterwhite has said.
A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Aarhus Royal Academy of Music, Bent Sørensen currently serves as a visiting professor of composition at London’s Royal Academy of Music.
