Brazil’s São Paulo Symphony Orchestra Appoints New Choir Conductor

Thomas Blunt will begin his role as the orchestra choir’s Principal Conductor in 2025

Having worked with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (Osesp) since 2011, the British conductor Thomas Blunt will be joining the orchestra as its new Principal Conductor of the choir as of 2025. 

Throughout his long-standing artistic relationship with Osesp over the years, Blunt's concert highlights have included performances of Bruckner’s Mass No. 2 in E minor, Brahms’ German Requiem, and Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle.

In his new role, he will work closely with Osesp’s Music Director, the Swiss conductor Thierry Fischer. 

A graduate of Cambridge University and the Royal College of Music, Blunt has held the positions of Chorus Master at Glyndebourne; Assistant Conductor to Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra; First Kapellmeister at Konzert Theater Bern; as well as Assistant Conductor at the Welsh National Opera. 

Additionally, he has led the Glyndebourne Tour, Royal Danish Opera, Opéra National du Rhin, Buxton Festival, Longborough Festival Opera, ROH2, Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur, Coro and Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Opéra de Lyon, La Monnaie, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

“I conducted the Osesp Choir for the first time in a collaboration with the London Philharmonic,” Blunt said in a separate post by Osesp. “At that moment, it became clear to me how extraordinary this group of singers was. I was impressed by its integrity, musicality, passion, commitment to collaboration and constant pursuit of the highest standards. Since then I have been fortunate enough to work with the Choir several times, and with each new opportunity I feel a deeper connection. I am excited to take another step in this relationship as Principal Regent and look forward to working with Thierry Fischer and the entire Osesp team.”
