Camille Saint-Saens' Cello Concerto No 1 in A minor Op. 33 premiered on this day in 1873 – 144 years ago.
The first performance was given by Belgian cellist Auguste Tolbeque.
The single movement work is a much-loved standard in today’s cello concert and competition repertoire.
