Israeli-born cellist and pedagogue Uzi Weisel has passed away – aged 92.

A graduate of The Juilliard School, where he studied with Felix Salmond and Bernard Greenhouse, Professor Weisel was a former prize winner at the Moscow and Pablo Casals International Cello Competitions – and was founding member of the internationally acclaimed Tel Aviv String Quartet.

He served teaching positions on faculty at the Tel Aviv University Academy of Music and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, in Australia.

Professor Weisel was recognized in 1996 by Indiana University with the title of ‘Chevalier du Violoncelle’ –  in recognition of his international contributions to the art of playing and teaching the cello.

“His tremendous musicality and insight, matched with his long experience as a musician at the highest international level, was an enormous asset to our faculty …” Sydney Conservatorium teaching colleague, violinist Ole Bohn has said.

“I will always remember him vividly … he was very important to the music world,” he has said.

Our condolences are with Professor Weisel’s family, friends, colleagues and students.

The Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition, in Hannover, Germany, has this week announced the appointment of violinists Antje Weithaas and Oliver Wille as its new Co-Artistic Directors.

The announcement comes following a number of nepotism allegations were leveled at the competition’s long-standing Artistic Director Krzysztof Wegrzyn – during the 2018 competition.

“It is of great importance to Stiftung Niedersachsen to preserve the competition, develop it further, and take it into the future … with Antje Weithaas and Oliver Wille, we will achieve just that,’ the Lower Saxony State Cultural Foundation General Secretary Lavinia Francke has said.

Antje Weitaas, the competition’s 1991 1st prize winner, currently serves on the teaching faculty of the Hanns Eisler Conservatory of Music in Berlin – and as Artistic Director of the Camerata Bern.

Oliver Wille is a founding member of the Kuss String Quartet – and currently serves on chamber music teaching faculty at the Hannover University of Music.

American pianist and aural ear-training educator Mary Anthony Cox has passed away.

A graduate of The Juilliard School, she served on the school’s ear training teaching faculty from 1964 until her retirement in 2013.

“She could be so intimidating … still after two weeks or so, I was her biggest fan and was inspired by the material – and her dedication to teaching it,” 2002 Juilliard School graduate Wayne Oquin has said.

“A methodical pedagogue … a thoughtful performer, a terrifying authoritarian … the best teacher I ever had … and the only one who forced me to work on skills I attempted to avoid …” Miss Cox’s online ratemyprofessor.com profile reads.

She will be remembered for her ‘intimidating level of knowledge, warmth, passion and dedication,’ The New York Times has today said.

Our condolences are with Miss Cox’s family, friends, colleagues and students.

CM Artists New York has this week announced the signing of Japanese-Canadian violin virtuoso Karen Gomyo to its roster for North American representation – effective immediately.

Karen was formerly managed by veteran artist manager Seldy Cramer from Seldy Cramer Artists, in San Francisco – who in August of last year advised her roster she would be significantly scaling back her workload as of January 1st, 2019.

“I’ve done this work continuously for 43 years  … no time off even when my children were born … it has been challenging, fun and rewarding …,” Seldy Cramer has said.

“My office will be contracting and servicing all artist engagements booked by me from now through the 2019-2020 season, but you will be hearing from new managers starting on January 1, 2019 about all future bookings …” she has said.

“I have loved managing Karen … her career is coming along brilliantly … she will be managed as of January 1, 2019 by the incomparable and excellent Linda Marder from CM Artists.”

Karen will continue to be managed by Etta Morgan at Askonas-Holt in London for Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

CM Artists New York’s roster includes conductor John Storgards, pianist Stephen Hough, violinists Christian Tetzlaff and VC Artist Angelo Xiang Yu and cellist Julian Schwarz.

The new disc features J.S. Bach’s Solo Violin Sonatas No. 1 & 2 in G Minor and A Minor – and Solo Violin Partita No. 1 in B Minor.

“When I recorded my first album, of half of the set, when I was 16 and 17, I didn’t have a plan to complete the set … I wanted simply to record the music I knew best at the time …” the 39-year-old superstar violinist, and mother of two, has told The Violin Channel.

“In the intervening years, this new record has been the project I’ve been asked about the most … ‘When are you going to complete your solo Bach?’” Hilary has said.

“This music is still the repertoire I play the most … every week, most days … and the time came when I felt this record needed to be made … I’m really proud of where it has led me.”

The Violin Channel recently caught up with Japanese-Canadian violin virtuoso Karen Gomyo.

In an VC-exclusive guest blog, the international soloist shares her thoughts on the importance of stretching before playing – to maintain ones body’s healthy balance.

“Stretching is a very important component (alongside strengthening, exercising, getting enough sleep, meditating, and eating healthily) of maintaining our bodies in healthy balance. We violinists use our bodies in a very asymmetrical way, and over time, if not aware and careful, these muscular and structural imbalances can lead to injuries.

The physical benefits of stretching are pretty logical: improvement of circulation and blood flow in the body, increased flexibility and range of motion in the joints, and prevention of the muscles from becoming short and stiff. For me, the most valuable aspect of stretching is the opportunity to cultivate a better connection with our bodies. The more we are aware of our own bodies’ particular habits and needs, the better we are able to detect any discomfort or tightness that needs addressing. After all, there are a ton of different exercises available, and this is because there isn’t one single magic formula that works for everybody. We must each find our own routine that makes the most sense for our specific needs!

One of the biggest challenges in today’s fast paced, busy ways, is finding the time to give ourselves this kind of care. But think of this as an investment towards your overall physical health, mental state, and violin playing (!) – there is always a way to make the time!

Stretching the muscles you are about to use in your practice session right beforehand is definitely a good idea if it is the first time you are stretching that day. But I find that stretching first thing in the morning can be a wonderful way to center and prepare myself physically and mentally before the day gets going. While a whole body stretch is ideal for when there is ample time, my favorite stretches for when I’m a bit short on time, include those for the spine, hips, shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, fingers, – and lungs. Yes, the lungs! Those of you practicing yoga, breathing exercises, qigong, etc, will already be familiar with the incredible power of conscious breathing. When I start my day with deep breathing, as well as a series of energizing quick breaths, I feel as if I am creating space and flexibility inside my body, and immediately feel calmer and more alert. And, if I apply this sense of relaxed consciousness to my stretches, I find myself connecting with my body in a way that brings so much awareness and a sense of grounding.

Stretching can also be an amazing thing to do right before going to bed. I have my favorite “shoulder therapy” routine, which has become a beloved companion. It amazes me every time to realize how much tension can build up by the end of the day! This routine is about 30 minutes long, and includes a series of slow stretches and long holds, again incorporating deep breaths. Afterwards I feel as if I’ve been given a neck and shoulder massage – it’s absolutely fantastic!

One thing I’d like to point out, is the importance of applying your full, undivided attention to the stretches you do. Don’t do them absentmindedly. Just like in the practice room, the more focus, the better results. For example, if you are doing a neck stretch, ask yourself: 1. Where exactly do I feel the tightness? 2. How intense is the tightness? Then take a deep breath and imagine breathing into that place, as if with each breath out the tension is gently releasing. Please be careful never to force. Listen to your body, and understand that some of the tightness may require many days/weeks/months of daily addressing before it is ready to let go.

Karen”

Avie Records has announced the release of the UK-based Briggs Piano Trio‘s new album: Gál and Shostakovich.

Featuring violinist David Juritz, pianist Sarah Beth Briggs and cellist Kenneth Woods, the disc features Austrian-British composer Hans Gál’s Piano Trio in E Major and Variations on a Heurigen Melody – and Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor.

“Cellist and conductor Kenneth Woods and I have a passion for and a great fascination in Hans Gál’s music … joined here by the brilliant violinist, David Juritz in the newly formed Briggs Piano Trio, we wanted to compare and contrast two great pieces of Twentieth Century chamber music …” Sarah has told The Violin Channel.

“Gál’s Trio abounds with lyricism and feels almost late romantic with a modern twist – while Shostakovich’s is anguished and gritty …” she has said.

“Our hope is listeners will wish to explore much more of Hans Gál’s great writing, after having heard some really high quality music on this disc.”

The Vienna Philharmonic has this week announced the launch of a new 2-year free-of-charge orchestral training academy – open to 12 outstanding international students aged 12-26.

The Academy will provide free-of-charge chamber music and private instrumental lessons, orchestral performance opportunities within the Vienna Philharmonic – plus Austrian culture and history classes.

The orchestra has indicated they are seeking both local and international applicants – with a greater goal of creating more diversity within the ensemble.

At least one student per class will be from the United States, the academy organizers have indicated.

“The academy is about having everyone speak the same musical language …” Conductor Franz Welser-Möst has said.

“By having the new Academy students become embedded in the VPO, the hope is to infect these young people with the virus … it is a calling for most people to be a part of the Philharmonic,” he has said.

Warner Classics has today announced the release of multiple Grammy Award-nominated violinist Philippe Quint’s new album Chaplin’s Smile.

Recorded with pianist Marta Aznavoorian and special guest violinist Joshua Bell to celebrate Charlie Chaplin’s 130th birthday, the disc features 13 world premiere arrangements of songs from his most popular films – including City Lights, The Great Dictator, The Kid, Limelight and Modern Times.

“This whole idea started with discovering that Charlie Chaplin was the sole composer behind the iconic song ‘Smile’ … upon researching further, I then discovered that Chaplin was actually a prolific composer who actually wrote most of the music and songs for his films …” Philippe has told The Violin Channel.

“For this new album, my debut on the Warner Classics label, I selected some of Chaplin’s best known songs … and put together brand new arrangements of them for violin and piano …” he has said.

“I hope this album touches many hearts … and in a words of Chaplin himself …’You find that life is still worthwhile, if you just smile.”

In a VC-exclusive guest blog, respected Chicago-based violin pedagogue Mrs Almita Vamos shares her thoughts on the technical and interpersonal qualities required to become an effective instrumental teacher …

“To be an effective, professional teacher, you need the same qualities that are required to be a good doctor, a good lawyer, or a good business executive. We have to understand our work thoroughly, be sensitive to the people with whom we are working, and love what we are doing. Perhaps even more importantly, we need to be passionate about doing the best we can and strive to continuously improve and expand our skills. Even after nearly 55 years of teaching, I am still working on this!

Teaching is easier today than ever before because we have so many sources from which we can learn. We have articles, books, conventions, masterclasses, and YouTube at our disposal! How lucky we are that we are not in a vacuum, but instead have the opportunity to learn from teachers of the past and present. We learn from the great masters who are no longer alive but have left a legacy of fine teaching; we learn from colleagues who have individual strengths and styles; and, MOST of all, we learn from our students.

In teaching, we must make sure that the student is comfortable, relaxed, and knowledgeable about the physics of the instrument. The body should not fight with the intricacies of the technique, and the technique must be applied to make the music speak. It is necessary for the student to try to learn the intent of the composer and then to feel free to express it in their own fashion. Music is both art and entertainment (within the bounds of good taste and intelligence, of course). When I am teaching, I am imparting my own ideas to the student—that is my job—but I remind my students that this is just a springboard. We can encourage students to take our advice but also let them use their own imaginations to develop a unique musical personality. As students mature, they can be given more freedom. If a student does not have the technical or musical maturity yet, the teacher must be more specific, hoping that, through osmosis, they will eventually develop their own personality without being indulgent.

The biggest challenge I have is to understand each student’s physical body and emotional state, as well as knowing how to adapt technique to fit the individual. I am continuously finding that each student I work with responds to criticism in different ways. A teacher’s job is to adapt their teaching style to inspire and instill confidence in every student. We must keep reminding ourselves that we cannot allow our moods or frustrations to interfere with the learning atmosphere. Do I ever make mistakes with this? Of course! But I always try to be more aware of how the student might be feeling. This awareness gives me the impetus to keep improving how I work and connect with students.”
