Austrian cellist and conductor Heinrich Schiff has died in Vienna – aged just 65.

A student of Tobias Kuhne and Andre Navarra at the Vienna Music Academy, he served as Artistic Director of the Northern Sinfonia – and as Chief Conductor of the Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur, Copenhagen Philharmonic and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.

He had been in poor health for several years following a stroke in 2008.
