Legendary British cellist Jacqueline du Pre died on this day in 1987 from Multiple Sclerosis – aged 42.
Despite being forced to retire from the concert stage aged just 28, Ms du Pré is widely respected as one of the finest musicians of the 20th Century – her interpretation of the Elgar Cello Concerto pedestalled as ‘definitive’ and ‘legendary’.
