ON THIS DAY | Happy Birthday, Cellist Johannes Moser!
A student of cellist David Geringas, Johannes is a former first prize winner at the Tchaikovsky International Cello Competition, at which he also won the Special Prize for his interpretation of the Rococo Variations
Today is German-Canadian cello virtuoso Johannes Moser’s 42nd birthday!
Today, he performs and records regularly with many of the world’s foremost orchestras and conductors. He has soloed with the Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Chicago Symphony, among many other ensembles.
Moser is committed to expanding the reach of classical music through commissioning and teaching. He has commissioned works by prominent contemporary composers including Julia Wolfe and Andrew Norman.
Ten years ago, he premiered Enrico Chapela's "Magnetar" for electric cello with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, after which he has continued to perform new works with the orchestra. He also regularly visits schools, gives masterclasses, and holds pre-concert lectures.
He plays on a 1694 Andrea Guarneri Cello from a private collection.
