Cleveland Orchestra to Present "A Day of Music for Israel"
The free day of concerts will take place on October 29, with all donations going to the Israel Emergency Fund
In light of the ongoing violence in Israel-Palestine, the musicians of the Cleveland Orchestra will perform a concert of music in support of both Israel and the local Jewish community. The concert, which will feature more than 40 players from the orchestra, will take place on October 29, 2023, at Temple Tifereth Israel in Beachwood.
The orchestra had scheduled a tour of Israel, which was to take place in late October this year — but was canceled following the Hamas terror attacks.
The day of music will feature three separate brackets, beginning in the early afternoon and moving through to the evening. The 2 PM set will feature works such as Ravel's Kaddish, Glick's Suite Hébraïque, and this will be followed by a set of brass-only works by Israeli composers at 3 PM.
Then at 4 PM, clarinetist Amitai Vardi and the Amernet String Quartet will perform a set of works. This is followed by Bridge's Lament as well as movements from Zemlinksy's Trio. The final set begins at 7 PM and features music by Bloch, Williams, Dvorak, Grieg, and Barber — and the evening will close with a rendition of the Israeli national anthem, "Hatikvah."
“Since its inception, the Cleveland Orchestra has received generous financial and moral support from Board members, donors, foundations, and patrons who are part of the Jewish community,” said violinist Kathleen Collins in a statement. “We feel it’s very important now to lend our support to a community which is shaken and hurting after the recent terror attack.”
