Composer and Cellist Peter Gregson's New Single
With a self-titled album coming in April, its first single, "Vision," is now available
The British cellist and composer Peter Gregson will soon release a new album on the Decca Records US label. The first single, "Vision," is now available for download, and the full album release will follow on April 11, 2025.
Blending the cello with the modular synthesizer, Gregson has composed a set of nineteenth-century-inspired "songs without words," a mode of expression originally popularized by Felix Mendelssohn.
A composer for both stage and screen, Gregson has written scores for Blackbird, Netflix’s Waco: American Apocalypse, and PlayStation’s Boundless, as well as TV shows including Bridgerton and The New Pope. He has released six solo albums since 2010, three of which were recorded for Deutsche Grammophon.
As a performer, he has given the premiere performances of works by Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannson, Steve Reich, and more.
Gregson created a bespoke synthesizer for this album, to allow him to record the full gamut of sounds made by the cello.
"A modular synthesizer typically would have an oscillator, and then go into filters, maybe a sequencer, reverb, delays — things to create a complete sound world," he said. "But the big thing is that it doesn’t have any oscillators; it only has a mic input for the cello. So everything that runs through it is a cello, and everything that comes out of it was created on a cello."
