David Serkin Ludwig Named Dean and Director of The Juilliard School
Transitioning from the Curtis Institute of Music, the American composer's new appointment begins on June 1, 2021
David Serkin Ludwig is the grandson of prolific pianist, Rudolph Serkin. His highly musical background led him to switch from his studies of art history to music when he was at Oberlin College.
He also studied at the University of Vienna, Manhattan School of Music, University of Pennsylvania — and was a student of giants like Jennifer Higdon, John Corgliano, and Richard Danielpour.
With his appointment at Juilliard, Ludwig will oversee artistic and educational activities. He will be working closely with students and faculty and lead Juilliard's music division by reflecting its values of excellence, creativity, and inclusiveness.
An eight-month, nationwide search occurred for a new dean. The process included advisory committees understanding the breadth of Juilliard's community with the help of faculty, staff, administration, trustees, and the students.
“Working with students is an incredibly rewarding and vital part of my life,” said Ludwig. “As an artist and educator, I am thrilled to be returning to Juilliard to work with students, faculty, and staff to help build school community and engage audiences in New York and around the world.”
