Russian Romantic composer, doctor and chemist Alexander Borodin was born on this day in 1833.

A member of ‘The Five’, his signature works include 3 symphonies, 2 string quartets and the opera ‘Prince Igor’.

He was a notable advocate of women’s rights and was the founder of the Women’s School of Medicine, in St Petersburg.
