Jewish-American composer Franz Waxman died on this day in 1967 from cancer – aged 59.

A prolific composer, he left a legacy of over 150 film scores and an abundant collection of concert works – including violin virtuosic bravura pieces Carmen Fantasie, Tristan and Isolde Fantasy and Auld Lang Syne Variations.
