Italian composer Gioachino Antonio Rossini died on this day in 1868 – aged 76.

One of the most popular opera composers in history, his signature works include: ‘The Barber of Seville’, ‘La Cenerentola’, ‘Moïse et Pharaon’ and ‘Guillaume Tell’.

Rossini died and was buried in Paris – but his remains were moved to Florence 19 years later – at the request of the Italian government.
