44 year-old French-Canadian composer Julien Gauthier has been tragically killed following an attack by a grizzly bear – in the Northwestern Territory of Canada.
Julien, who had served as Composer-In-Residence with the Brittany Symphony Orchestra, in Rennes, France since 2017, was travelling along the Mackenzie River, in Northern Canada, as part of a musical project to record the remote sounds of nature.
“I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of our road companion, the composer and associate artist of the symphonic orchestra of Brittany, Julien Gauthier …” close friend, Marc Feldman has today said.
“He was a sensitive, generous and talented man that many of us had the chance to know by his work and the gift of his friendship … his work was faithful to his curious spirit, humble in front of the vast power and beauty of nature,” he has said.
It’s believed Julien was attacked and dragged away from his camp site by a grizzly bear whilst sleeping overnight.
His body has since been located.
Our condolences are with Julien’s family, friends and colleagues.
