Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe died on this day in 2014 – aged 85.

Mr Sculthorpe’s signature works include 17 string quartets – and his symphonic poems ‘Kakadu’ and ‘Earth Cry’.

His works are noted for their unusual and percussive timbral effects – said to evoke the sounds and feelings of the Australian bushland and outback.
