Music Director of Canada’s Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra Steps Down

Italian violinist Elisa Citterio became music director of Tafelmusik — a Canadian baroque orchestra — in 2017. She then filled the role after an extensive search by the organization to replace Tafelmusik’s founding music director Jeanne Lamon. 

According to Ludwig van Toronto, Citterio took part in a variety of responsibilities during her over five-year tenure. She appointed new artistic directors, explored 17th to 19th century repertoire, commissioned new works, and formed international collaborations. 

Citterio also played a significant role in creating Tafelmusik’s most recent studio album, “Vivaldi con amore,” and headlined tours around Europe and Australia.

As the Tafelmusik board navigates the search for a new music director, the organization recently appointed an artistic committee to oversee their 2022-23 concert season which has announced a lineup of events.

The reason for Citterio's departure has not been disclosed at this time.

A soloist and chamber musician, Citterio was a member of the Orchestra del Teatro della Scala di Milano between 2004 and 2017 before her role at Tafelmusik. Her baroque violin mentors included Enrico Onofri, Chiara Banchini, and Luigi Mangiocavallo.

Her discography involves over 35 recordings including opera recordings with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Edward Gardner, Daniele Gatti, Daniel Harding, Loribn Maazel, and Riccardo Muti.
