Conductor Dima Slobodeniouk Makes New York Philharmonic Debut

The Finnish-Russian conductor will step in for Semyon Bychkov to conduct the NY Philharmonic on November 17, 18, and 19, 2021

It would have been Semyon Bychkov’s return to the U.S. for the first time since 2018, but travel complications have prevented the trip.

Dima Slobodeniouk will step in with a program involving Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with soloist Karen Gomyo and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1 in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. For more information and to purchase tickets for the concert, click here.

For the past two weeks, Slobodeniouk conducted both the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra. For those performances, he was described by The Boston Globe as directing “plenty of verve and soul.” He has held the position of Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia since 2013, in addition to serving as Principal Conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Sibelius Festival.

For other orchestras, COVID-19 is still causing problems for live performances. This month, Bychkov was due to conduct the Cleveland Orchestra whose recent performances were cancelled due to a positive COVID-19 case in the ensemble.
