Dallas Symphony Orchestra Announces Performances of All Four Ring Cycle Operas
The semi-staged operas will be conducted by Fabio Luisi in October 2024
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is set to present a complete opera-in-concert performance of Wagner's mammoth Der Ring des Nibelungen, or the Ring Cycle, in October of 2024. Comprising Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung, the cycle lasts for approximately fifteen hours in total.
The cycle begins on October 5 and runs until October 20, with two performances of Siegfried and Götterdämmerung. Patrons can attend a selection of these semi-staged operas, or save 15% on the ticket prices when they purchase a bundle of all four operas.
These concert productions will feature singers including Daniel Johansson (tenor, Siegfried), Mark Delavan (bass-baritone, Wotan), Lise Lindstrom (soprano, Brünnhilde), and Sara Jakubiak (soprano, Sieglinde).
The operas will be conducted by Fabio Luisi, who has been Music Director of the DSO since the 2020/21 season. He first led the orchestra as a guest conductor in 2002. Luisi is also presently Principal Conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo.
Despite being most closely associated with the operas of Verdi, Luisi also has a great deal of experience with Wagner. He won his first GRAMMY in 2013 for his recording of half of the Ring in Deutsche Grammophon's DVD release of the full cycle, which was recorded live at the Metropolitan Opera.
"As you know, Wagner’s operas are of the utmost importance to the operatic repertoire, but operas rarely get a chance to be performed in their entirety in the orchestral world," said Kim Noltemy, the orchestra’s previous Ross Perot President & CEO, at an event announcing the project in 2022.
