NEW MUSIC TUESDAY | Newly-Premiered Esa-Pekka Salonen Cello Concerto, 2017 [AUDIO]

Cellist Nicolas Altstaedt performing Esa-Pekka Salonen's newly-premiered Cello Concerto - for solo cello, orchestra and electronic feedback loops

German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt performing acclaimed Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen's newly-premiered Cello Concerto - for solo cello, orchestra and electronic feedback loops.

Recorded live on August 11, 2017 at the Helsinki Festival - with Salonen conducting the Finnish National Opera.

The 35 minute, 3 movement work, co-commissioned by the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, the Barbican Centre and the Elbphilharmonie, was first performed in March of this year - with soloist Yo-Yo Ma and the Chicago Symphony.

"The ideas for the piece can be traced back by at least three decades ... but the actual material for the piece was developed in the summer of 2015 when I decided to spend a few months researching new kinds of textures ..." the composer has said.
