In a VC-exclusive blog, American violist and former Primrose Competition 1st Prize winner Jennifer Stumm talks us through her 2005 experience:

Music competitions are like a strange fruit salads where one flavor has to be chosen over the others. Jury members are differing individuals, competitors have various excellent qualities and the result is a jumble of opinions where some like apples more and some prefer bananas. Primrose was my first “big” competition win, having previously entered a number of smaller ones with varied success. For sure getting on stage over and over under pressure was very positive in building trust in my own voice and stamina (I’ve never been so tired as I was during every competition I entered, nor have I had less fun.) There are incremental gains through all these experiences, and perhaps for me Primrose was my tipping point. At any rate, luckily for me, that week the jury consensus landed on my side of the fruit bowl!

There was indeed some controversy over the decision that year, with another prize winner making their displeasure very much known, and various audience members taking “sides.” I recall being both praised and criticized for details ranging from my choice of dress (floral, vintage Saint Laurent which I still love. Later haters!) to how I played a chord in the Bartok concerto. That all seems so silly now in the scope of a life and career. The world has space for many kinds of artists and points of view, and if I look at the other excellent violists who won prizes that year, each has taken a distinct and successful path.

For an instrument where opportunities to distinguish oneself as a solo artist are few, and solo concert opportunities even fewer, any chance to throw your hat out into the world is valuable. That season was a good one for me, with several competition victories and I do believe that momentum was a help to the start of my career, gaining chances to be heard. The reality of musical life though is much more complex, based on relationships, ingenuity, and plain old good luck sometimes, not just who is “best.”

I think it can be a tough transition for young performers (it was for me) when big early opportunities can feel so loaded with pressure, a long tunnel where for several years you’re constantly applying for this and that, worried that without those benchmarks nothing will happen. In reality, many wonderful musicians have never won competitions and now have “big” careers. Many wonderful musicians also won big competitions and have never realized those kind of careers, or realized they had totally different dreams.

The greatest gift of my Primrose experience was learning to worry less about what people think. To wear the dress I want and play the way I want. To trust the people who like my work and let the others find someone else to like. That music is not win or lose. I framed all my best rejection letters and hung them in my bathroom. I often tell my students about the year I won first prize in another big competition, when just the year before I was rejected from the tape round(I don’t think my playing changed that much!) These are all just experiences along the way, not destinations. A competition is just a construct, one moment in time, helpful or not helpful. A long and interesting musical life is by far the biggest prize.

– Jennifer”

In a VC-exclusive guest blog, Masumi takes us inside the viola’s cornerstone solo repertoire.

“Primrose asked the ailing Bartok to write a viola concerto in 1944.

Bartok started writing the concerto, made some initial drafts, and then succumbed to the leukemia he had been battling for some time already.

Unfortunately, he didn’t have a chance to finish the work and the first few decades of performances required the help of his student, Tibor Serly, for a completed score.

Now that the copyright rules have loosened, we have new editions by Paul Neubauer, Csaba Erdelyi, and Atar Arad, among others.

I love that Primrose made a special request that Bartok not dumb down the technical writing for viola – this is a difficult piece to play!

Here is a wonderful recording by Yehudi Menuhin. Yes, the violinist, Yehudi Menuhin!

Before Primrose, there was Lionel Tertis, the great English virtuoso champion of the viola.

William Walton wrote this viola concerto for him in 1929 but Tertis actually rejected our now dearly treasured viola concerto!

Thankfully, Hindemith stepped in to perform the premiere and it was a tremendous success.

Tertis then ‘changed his mind’ about the piece…!

Walton greatly admired Prokofiev’s music and modeled this work after his First Violin Concerto.

It is a fascinating study to compare and contrast the two pieces that are so similar and yet so different!

This is a beautiful recording of the Walton Concerto by my teacher, Karen Dreyfus

In 1890 Brahms vowed to quit composing.

Then, he heard Richard Muhlfeld play his clarinet and Brahms changed his mind!

As a result, we have the Clarinet Sonatas, Clarinet Quintet, and the Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano. We’re so lucky to have this amazing and beautiful music.

Just imagine, it is as if Mozart or Schubert had lived longer and written more music!

Brahms transcribed his Sonatas for viola at the request of his publisher with this idea that they could sell more copies.

Brahms took many passages down the octave and it has become a debate over how to handle his choices with many violists opting to play in the original register now.

Written in 1975, the Shostakovich Viola Sonata is a powerful and profoundly beautiful work.

Composed at the end of an incredibly difficult life dealing with Soviet oppression and devastation, it is his final work.

Filled with many quotes of his own music as well as others (most significantly Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in the 3rd movement,) it has a mysterious and enigmatic quality that can evolve endlessly as you delve further into his output and life’s story.

Hindemith & Shostakovich: Viola Sonatas

Yuri Bashmet, Viola

Sviatoslav Richter, Piano

Release Date: January 1, 1985

1919 was a hugely important year for viola repertoire! From 1919, we have the Clarke Sonata, Hindemith Opus 11 no. 4, and Bloch Suite.

It is particularly fascinating to consider how each of these incredibly different works were affected by WW I which only ended a few short years before.

Rebecca Clarke wasn’t a prolific composer but her sonata is a jewel we are lucky to have.

Critics thought it wasn’t possible that a woman could compose so well and there was conjecture that Rebecca Clarke was actually the pen name of a man! A frustratingly absurd notion!

Sonatas for Viola & Piano Vol. 1 |CD|

Tabea Zimmermann, Viola

Kirill Gerstein, Piano

Release Date: December 18, 2015

Myrios Classics

This is from a performance of the Clarke Sonata I gave with Alan Chow in 2017 at the Eastman School of Music – where we are both on the faculty.

Hope you enjoy this year’s Primrose Competition coverage and the best of luck to all the competitors.

In a VC-exclusive blog, French viola virtuoso and former 1st Prize winner Antoine Tamestit talks us through his 2001 experience:

“I entered the competition during my second year of studies at Yale University with Jesse Levine. During my first year, Jesse prepared me for the Maurice Vieux Competition in Paris, which I surprisingly won in 2000. It seemed that the 7 or 8 months of dedicated work on a competition program had been very productive and helped me improve immensely. So we both agreed I should prepare another, new program during the following year, and enter another competition. It was also the moment when I got to discover Primrose’s recordings and videos, and how he elevated the Viola world. He became one of my most important idols.

Entering the Primrose also proved to be very successful and I learned so much from Jesse on mental preparation, on how to work slowly but surely through a long and difficult program, on how to repeat performances of a work and make it better and better every time, etc… Jesse was a fantastic coach and mentor for these circumstances.

I remember feeling very nervous, as I did in every competition, but it was a positive excitement that made me want to be better and serve the music the best possible way. Waiting for the results was always the scariest of moments, though…

I remember that Barbara Hamilton, whom I had already met for a Master Class, was in the jury and I liked her so much that it made me want to play well for her too.

I also remember meeting Charles PINKLER, the Solo Viola of the Chicago Symphony at the time, with great respect.

And finally I remember winning, as one of the competition prizes, a very beautiful book of Stradivarius instruments, in which I discovered already at that time the famous and unique “Mahler” Viola of 1672, having no idea it would become my concert “partner” 7 years later…

The Primrose Competition gave me a great boost, mostly due to its name and reputation. And although it only offered me one concert appearance (at the Seattle Viola Congress in 2002), people recognised this prize very highly, and I received more concert invitations after it. It also gave me motivation to pursue the great learning process of each competition program, and I subsequently entered and won the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York as well as the Munich ARD Competition, with more confidence.

To this day, what I keep from the Primrose Competition is the incredible repertoire which I learned. All these pieces, which I repeated and repeated for so many days are now in my blood, I deeply love them and it never takes me too long to revive them for concerts. Competitions are a great way to prepare for the professional life, which requires of us organisation and efficiency in the learning process of repertoire. I am glad I worked so hard during my student days.

– Antoine”

VC INTERVIEW | Rockport Music Festival Artistic Director, Violinist Barry Shiffman https://theviolinchannel.com/barry-shiffman-violinist-rockport-music-festival-artistic-director-interview/ https://theviolinchannel.com/barry-shiffman-violinist-rockport-music-festival-artistic-director-interview/#respond Fri, 15 Jun 2018 21:15:46 +0000 https://theviolinchannel.com/?p=82826 The Violin Channel recently caught up with the newly-appointed Rockport Chamber Music Festival Artistic Director, former long time St. Lawrence String Quartet violinist, Mr Barry Shiffman.

The Rockport Music Festival will run from the 15th of June until the 15th of July at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, Massachusetts, United States – and will feature chamber music programmes by leading international artists including violinist James Ehnes, the Pinchas Zukerman Trio, Emerson Quartet, Brentano Quartet, pianists Stephen Prutsman and Yekwon Sunwoo – and VC Artists Dover and Attacca String Quartets.

How did this amazing new opportunity come to you to work with the famed Rockport Music Festival?

“Whilst playing with the St Lawrence Quartet for 17 seasons, we recorded and travelled all over the world, and I developed a great interest and passion in the creation of projects and programs.

When this amazing opportunity came up, I thought … why not?

I am absolutely thrilled to lead this remarkable 5 week festival … it’s an incredible journey, honor and treat to be building on something that is already doing so well.”

What is the process for putting a festival such as this together?

“My best piece of advice for anyone creating a festival is … just start by listening … listen to what the local community is telling you … when you speak to people you hear what the festival means to them … and everything just naturally builds up from there.”

What are your goals for this year’s festival?

“My first priority with this year’s festival is to interact and engage our Rockport community.

As such, we’ve organized a number of free family and community concerts – including a performance by the wonderful Dover Quartet specifically for people with autism and their families.

My second focus is on investment and innovation – to make the festival a part of the entire ecosystem of creativity and to identify projects that need support.

And my last pillar is that of artistic excellence in everything we do.”

How does a chamber music festival differ compared to an in season solo or chamber music performance?

“A festival is about connecting more directly with the audience … more directly with the staff … with the supporters … with the funders.

It’s a different experience than the one night stand, which is what happens so often in the regular performance season.”

Do you think it is a valuable skill for young performers to be able to create their own festival performance opportunities?

“I think it is a hugely valuable skill … the classical music world is undergoing a traumatic change and we are seeing huge growth in the chamber music festival model.

Yes, keep practicing those orchestral excerpts and nail those auditions … but also ask yourself how much time are you spending exploring these unique festival opportunities?”

What would you say to someone putting together a festival, what are some of the challenges, pitfalls, and rewards?

“Challenges … it is a ton of work … you’ll find yourself in a day helping move stands, working with somebody who might connect you with a potential funder, making 2-3 programs, talking to the Violin Channel et al …

Meanwhile you have to perform in the evening …. so you are taking on so many different tasks and changing gears constantly.

But that said, the rewards are the friendships with the people who come to the concerts, the people you make music with … and all the incredible people you meet along the way.”

Recorded with music director Martin Pearlman, the disc features the three Mystery Violin Sonatas of composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644 – 1704).

“Heinrich Biber possessed the genius of a musical revolutionary and in the Mystery Sonatas he combines extreme compositional techniques with music that speaks to the soul …” Christina Day Martinson, the ensemble’s Concertmaster, has told The Violin Channel.

“What I find astonishing about the Mystery Sonatas is that music that was written nearly 350 years ago can sound so new, fresh and exciting,” she has said.

“Biber’s use of scordatura (mistuning of the violin) is unconventional and daring … no one to this day has experimented with scordatura to the degree that Biber did … I find this remarkable!”

The disc features all 20 Solo Etudes by Austrian cellist-composer Joseph Merk (1795 – 1852).

“Joseph Merk was friends with Schubert and Chopin and a Professor at the conservatory in Vienna … his 20 studies Op. 11 are not only of great pedagogical value for students, but also surprisingly charming pieces of music …” Martin has told The Violin Channel.

“With my recording of these etudes, I hope to motivate students to work on them not only as technical exercises, but also as musical works that deserve artistic attention …” the Auckland University of Music Head of School has said.

“For the non-cellists who listen to the recording, I hope to draw attention to a musician who has largely been forgotten – maybe this triggers enough curiosity to look for other works of his.”

The group comprising members of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras, features violinists VC Artist Noah Bendix-Balgley and Sebastian Gürtler, violist Thilo Fechner, cellist Stephan Koncz, bassist Ödön Rácz, pianist Christoph Traxler and clarinetist Daniel Ottensamer.

“Philharmonix, the joint music club of two of the world’s greatest orchestras, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic, are among the most exciting ensembles that bring together different musical genres and different audiences …” Opus 3 Berlin Managing Director Marcus Felsner has told The Violin Channel.

“Bringing fans of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic around the world together with these fantastic guys and their amazing programs is a unique privilege and great fun!” he has said.

“All of the Philharmonix members carry on busy musical lives, mixing our orchestra jobs with solo and chamber work … I have to always plan my schedule well in advance, so I can balance my job at the Berlin Philharmonic, my solo work, and the concerts with Philharmonix ….” VC Artist Noah Bendix-Balgley has told The Violin Channel.

“For all of us, finding the time to play together in this group is very important … we get to play different styles and music with Philharmonix than we do anywhere else … and above all, we just have a great time playing together,” he has said.

“I hope audiences have fun at our concerts … we certainly do!”

Opus 3 has indicated the ensemble already has upcoming performances planned in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Japan, Korea, Boston and Washington D.C.  in addition to a residency at the Vienna Konzerthaus, in Austria.
