The Warsaw National Philharmonic, in Warsaw, Poland, has this week announced the appointment of Russian conductor Andrey Boreyko as its new Music Director – effective from 2019.

“This appointment is indeed an honor for me … I have Polish ancestry and the Polish part of my musical soul always feels so at home in Poland …” the 61-year-old has said.

“To have the opportunity to work closely with such a wonderful orchestra as Warsaw Philharmonic is exciting,” he has said.

Maestro Boreyko has been a frequent guest conductor with the ensemble since 2007 – and will replace veteran conductor Jacek Kaspszyk in the role.

He currently leads the Artis-Naples Orchestra, in Florida – and has previously served as Music Director of the Polish Poznań Symphony.

It has been reported this week that a sexual harassment complaint has been filed by a member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra against the ensemble’s Concertmaster, Jonathan Carney.

The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has alleged that the orchestra’s leader propositioned Principal Oboist, Katherine Needleman for sexual relations in 2005 … and that she has since been subjected to “daily hostility and efforts to undermine her work and authority … combined with physical intimidation and threats.”

“This is a problem that needs to be exposed … it has been pushed under the rug too long,” the oboist has told local media.

“Nothing ever occurred … there was no harassment, no retaliation, no hostile work environment,” Jonathan Carney has said.

It’s understood that following a complaint, by Katherine Needleman to the orchestra’s management early this year, an outside organization was appointed to investigate the allegations.

“The report indicated that there has not been a hostile work environment … we take very seriously the allegations and are carefully reviewing the actions recommended in the report,” Orchestra President and Chief Executive Peter T. Kjome has said in a statement.

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, in Canada, has this week announced the appointment of 42-year-old Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno as its new Music Director – effective from the commencement of the 2020-2021 season.

“We at the TSO were searching for a leader who would take our highly talented musicians to the next level and, in Maestro Gimeno, we have found exactly that person …” Orchestra Chair of the Board of Directors Catherine Beck has said.

“Gustavo has all the qualities you could ask for in a modern Music Director … he will lead the Orchestra with passion and imagination, bring the TSO to where Torontonians live, and stir this city’s appreciation of great music,” she has said.

“I am so proud to become the Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra … from our very first encounter, I connected with the Orchestra’s sound, their cultivated playing and flexibility, and immediately felt at home, both musically and personally …” Gustavo has said.

“I greatly admire the TSO’s dual commitment to presenting the core repertoire while also introducing new composers and concert formats in a uniquely Canadian way … I look forward to sharing our musical stories with our loyal audiences everywhere,” he has said.

Gustavo will replace conductor Peter Oundjian – whose fourteen year tenure will conclude at the end of the current season.

It has been announced this week that two principal players with the New York Philharmonic have been dismissed from the orchestra – due to unspecified misconduct.

The two musicians have been identified as Principal Oboist Liang Wang – and Associate Principal Trumpeter, Matthew Muckey.

Both musicians had served as members of the ensemble since 2006.

It is understood the two musicians had been under an internal investigation for the past 5 months.

“Following the investigation, the Philharmonic advised the musicians that their employment was terminated,” the orchestra has said in a statement.

“Mr Wang is extremely disappointed in the Philharmonic’s decision and emphatically denies that he engaged in any misconduct,” Liang Wang’s lawyer has said.

“Mr Muckey has not engaged in any misconduct, and there is no legitimate basis by the New York Philharmonic to terminate him,” a lawyer for Matthew Muckey has said.

No details of the allegations against the two men have been released.

18-year-old Italian violinist Vikram Sedona has been awarded 2nd prize at the 2018 George Enescu International Violin Competition – in Bucharest, Romania.

No 1st prize was awarded at this year’s competition.

3rd prize was presented to 17-year-old Italian violinist Giuseppe Gibboni.

A current student of jury member Silvia Marcovici at the University of Performing Arts in Graz, Vikram is a former 1st prize winner at the Andrea Postacchini International Violin Competition.

The decision not to award a 1st prize at this edition, was at the discretion of Jury President Pierre Amoyal, the competition has indicated.

“We have enjoyed an exceptional evening, expressive contestants, with good mature technique at a very early age … we have seen innate talent and their potential …” Competition Director Mihai Constantinescu has said.

“The President of the Jury has the supreme authority and he wished to highlight the fact that, aside from an exceptional gift, more persistence is still needed to valorize talent,” he has said.

The 2018 violin jury comprised: Pierre Amoyal (President), Krzysztof Wegrzyn, Viktor Tretyakov, Remus Azoiţei, Agustin León Ara, Salvatore Accardo, Pavel Vernikov, Eduard Schmieder and Silvia Marcovici.

Previous major prize winners include: Silvia Marcovici, Philip Hirshchhorn – and VC Artists Alexandra Conunova and Fedor Rudin.

With the 2018 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis drawing to a dramatic climax this weekend, VC recently caught up with a number of former prize winners, to get a better understanding of their time at the competition – and the opportunities the quadrennial event has since presented.

In a VC-exclusive blog, Italian-born German violin virtuoso and former 1st Prize winner, VC Artist Augustin Hadelich talks us through his 2006 experience:

“Winning the Gold Medal at the Indianapolis Competition was a huge breakthrough for me. Now more than ever, it is hard to distinguish yourself when you first start out. However, winning a competition doesn’t by itself make a career. The real test is whether the career keeps going after the winner’s concerts are over, through re-invitations. Therefore, the pressure never quite lets up, and although luck plays a role, it’s essential to be persistent, resilient, and organized.

I always found competitions stressful. I enjoy making music with other musicians, but had a really hard time competing against them, especially since many of the participants in the 2006 Indianapolis competition were my friends from music school or festivals. During the competition I avoided social media, reading reviews or watching other violinists. I didn’t even tell my parents back in Italy about the competition, since that would make them nervous, which would make me nervous!  I remember distracting myself by watching the US open, which was happening at the same time, and am grateful for my understanding and kind host family.

I tried to pretend that each round was a concert. It helped that the audience was so wonderful and supportive. It’s terrible when you see audience members at some competitions making notes when a contestant makes a mistake. In Indianapolis people just came to enjoy the performances and made me feel welcome on stage.

My most memorable moment was standing on stage when the results were announced, starting with sixth prize, counting down. When the second prize was announced, and I realized that I had won, it was one of the happiest moments of my life. I think I didn’t sleep for 2 days afterwards!

I am grateful that the IVCI didn’t overwhelm me with a million concerts immediately. I had time to prepare new programs before the concert tours started. For the first few years, I gained experience traveling and juggling repertoire while playing with many smaller orchestras. By the time of my Carnegie Hall debut in 2008, I had gained confidence as well as performing experience. Then came the call in the summer of 2008: there was a cancellation at the Hollywood Bowl. Could I play Prokofiev’s second concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in two days? If this question came in 2006, I would have felt overwhelmed, but by 2008 I was ready for the adventure! From this and other last minute cancellation calls, I learned to never to go anywhere without my violin and my concert clothes!

-Augustin”
