Australian opera singer David Edward Lewis has this week been sentenced, in a Sydney court, to three years imprisonment for the historical sexual assault of a 14 year old girl.

A former permanent member of the Opera Australia ensemble for more than 25 years, Lewis, 58, pled guilty to maintaining a sexual relationship with the teenager member of the opera company’s children’s chorus from December 1993 until April 1995.

Lewis was 34 years old at the time of the first assault.

“Lewis set out to exploit the immaturity of the victim for his own sexual gratification,” Judge Sarah Huggett said whilst handing down the sentence.

The court heard that one assault, at the time, was witnessed by a cast member and reported to Opera Australia’s management.

The victim, now in her late 30s, told the court Lewis would sneak her around the different areas of the Sydney Opera House – and groomed her into thinking she was “important” and and “his special friend.”

The tenor stood down from Opera Australia, only last year, after the allegations against him were reported by the victim to police.

The Michigan Daily campus newspapers has this week raised allegations of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct against University of Michigan School of Music Violin Professor Stephen Shipps – with some alleged incidences spanning back almost 40 years.

The accusations include reports, by numerous female students, of alleged unwelcome touching, sexual assault – and of maintaining prolonged sexual relations with teenage students.

Shipps, 65, has served a teaching position at the University since September 1989 – and currently serves as the School of Music’s Chair of Strings and as Faculty Director of the Strings Preparatory Academy pre-college program.

No charges have been brought against Mr Shipps.

Presumptions of innocence apply.

It has been announced this week that Graz Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra Chief Conductor Oksana Lyniv will step down from the role – at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 season.

She has led the orchestra since 2017.

“I am grateful to the Graz Opera and Graz Philharmonic and the Artistic Director Nora Schmid for this opportunity to further develop my work as a conductor … and for the outstanding quality of the music and high artistic standards …” the 40-year-old Ukrainian-born Maestra has told local media.

“I am very pleased, but the obligations of being a chief conductor can be limiting to international commitments, so I have decided to return to my work as a freelancer conductor,” she has said.

Oskana will be replaced by German conductor Roland Kluttig – as of the commencement of the 2020-2021 season.

It has been announced this week that 26-year-old American VC Young Artist William Hagen has been granted the long term use of the 1732 Arkwright Lady Rebecca Sylvan Stradivarius violin – on generous loan from the Rachel Barton Pine Foundation.

“I am SO happy to be loaned this gorgeous violin … I’ve been incredibly lucky in having opportunities to play great instruments for many years now, and I’m so, so grateful to the Rachel Barton Pine Foundation for loaning me this amazing Strad …” the former Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition prize winner has told The Violin Channel.

“I think this violin will improve my playing, because it forces me to relax and use less effort … it appears to cut through the orchestra texture easier than my past instruments … and I can’t wait to get to know it better!” he has said.

VC YOUNG ARTIST WILLIAM HAGEN | KORNGOLD VIOLIN CONCERTO | CHRISTOPH ESCHENBACH & FRANKFURT RADIO SYMPHONY | 2017

The instrument, valued at in excess of US $4 Million, was donated to the Foundation’s Instrument Loan Program by Dr Joseph Sylvan – a former Professor of Music at the New Mexico State University.

The RBP Foundation was established in 2001 by violinist, Rachel Barton Pine – with the goal of providing services and funding for classical music education, research, performances and artists.

To date, the RBP Foundation has supported more than 70 young string players – via its instrument loan and financial assistance programmes.

It has been announced today at the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition, in Michigan, United States, has been terminated and will not return in 2019 – due to a lack of financial sustainability.

Hosted over the past three years by the University of Michigan School of Music, previous 1st prize winners include the VC Artists Calidore String Quartets, the Moscow-based fusion quartet Russian Renaissance – and the Aizuri Quartet.

AIZURI QUARTET | 2018 M-PRIZE CHAMBER ARTS COMPETITION | GRAND PRIZE

“The competition gave chamber ensembles from around the world much-deserved attention and support … but unfortunately, it is not possible to maintain the financial structure needed to continue M-Prize while also supporting the University of Michigan School of Music’s own growth in chamber music and its many other disciplines …” Music School Dean David Gier has today said.

“We are profoundly grateful to U-M Office of the Provost and an anonymous donor, both of whom made it possible for the School of Music to run the competition for three inspirational years,”  he has said.

The San Francisco Symphony has today announced the appointment of Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen as its new Music Director – effective from the commencement of the 2020-2021 season.

The 60-year-old will succeed Maestro Michael Tilson-Thomas who announced in October of last year his intension to step down from the helm at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 season, after 25 years.

Maestro Salonen previous served as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1992 until 2009.

“When I started talking to San Francisco, I really felt that everything I had been thinking about … my ideas about an orchestra as an institution … my ideas about tech and music … my ideas about repertoire and how I would like to position the orchestra within the community … it just resonated, ” he has told The New York Times.

“The move will place Mr. Salonen, one of classical music’s great disrupters – and the rare conductor who is tech savvy and cool enough to have been a pitchman for Apple – at the helm of an orchestra seeking to feed off the creative energy of Silicon Valley,” The New York Times has said.

As announced yesterday on The Violin Channel, Maestro Salonen will step down from his role as Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra at the conclusion of the 2020-2021 season.

And, as announced last month, he will be joining the conducting teaching faculty of The Colburn School, in Los Angeles, at the commencement of the new academic year – directing the newly-established Negaunee Conducting Program for pre-professional fellows.
