Fire Breaks Out at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester
The fire began in a concert hall at the school’s Long Millgate campus last week around 2:20 AM
The students and staff were quickly evacuated from the residential school building as help was called to the scene. They waited outside as four fire engines arrived to tend to the situation. Luckily, no one was injured during the incident.
The school declared considerable damage to its Whiteley Hall and water damage to the school gymnasium. The cause of the fire is yet to be announced.
"We are incredibly thankful for the rapid response of the emergency services, who responded within minutes ensuring the safety of our young people," the spokesperson told Manchester Evening News. "We cannot praise our wonderful young people enough for the way they responded with such maturity to the situation."
A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service stated: "The fire involved one of the school’s concert halls, which was unoccupied at the time. Students and staff were evacuated and rehoused in other parts of the building as a precaution.
"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels, positive pressure ventilation, a thermal imaging camera and lighting to extinguish the fire. Fire crews were in attendance for several hours."
"THANK YOU for the many many good wishes after our little fire last night. Students and staff are all safe and well,” reads the school’s Facebook post. "Some of our phenomenal young people are even performing livestream concerts from The Stoller Hall tonight. Tune in if you'd like to show them your support. We're so proud of them today, and always."
