Fromm Music Foundation Announces 2024 Commission Recipients
The selected composers have been announced alongside the Project Grants recipients and winner of the Fromm Prize
Aiming to support the creation of new musical works and bring contemporary concert music closer to the public, Harvard University’s Fromm Music Foundation has now selected 12 composers to write new works.
The 2024 Fromm Music Foundation Commission recipients are Katherine Balch, Lembit Beecher, Yu-Hui Chang, Inga Chinilina, Lei Liang, Annea Lockwood, Andrew Norman, Ayò Olúrántí, Charles Peck, Matthew Ricketts, Shelley Washington, and Trevor Weston.
Further, the Foundation’s $20,000 Fromm Prize, which recognizes innovative commitment to the music of our time, has been awarded to the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) for its contributions to promoting new music.
Additionally, the Foundation offers project grants each year to support its organizational partners who promote the stewardship of new music and support early-career composers.
The 2024/25 Fromm Music Foundation Project Grant recipients are the American Academy in Rome, American Composers Orchestra, Brevard Music Center, Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), Composers Conference and Chamber Music Center, International Contemporary Ensemble, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and the Tanglewood Music Center.
“So grateful for this support from the Fromm Foundation and excited to be writing a new piece for Music on the Strait!” Beecher posted on Facebook. “I know commission grants like this one are increasingly rare and elusive in our field — I think I’ve applied to this one over 10 times! — and I count myself particularly lucky to be recognized alongside such wonderful composers and colleagues. Can’t wait to hear what wild and wondrous new sounds everyone creates!”
Founded by the late Paul Fromm in 1952, the Fromm Music Foundation is based at Harvard University, where it runs in partnership with the Harvard University Music Department. Since its inception, the Foundation has commissioned almost 500 new compositions.
Among the concerts and series it has sponsored include Tanglewood’s Festival of Contemporary Music, American Composers Orchestra, and the Fromm Players Concert at Harvard University.
