Israeli Pianist Ilan Rogoff has Died, Age 81

Known for his interpretation of Romantic composers, Rogoff has concerti dedicated to him by by John McCabe and Ivan Eröd

Ilan Rogoff's piano playing evolved from a combination of both the Eastern European and Germanic traditions. He studied with leaders of the both of these movements including  Karol Klein, Stefan Askenase, and Vladimir Horowitz, plus Leonard Shure and Claudio Arrau.

His career was multifaceted — he performed piano recitals around the world, conducted cycles of  Mozart or Beethoven concerti from the keyboard,  transcribed, edited, and recorded works by Piazzolla for piano solo, and taught master classes.

Among the conductors he greatly enjoyed working with are: Aharonovitch, Allemandi, Barshai, Bender, Bloemstedt, Chmura, De Preist, Dorati, Justus Frantz, Giulini, Griffith, Groves, Herbig, Klecki, Krips, Kuhn, Lopes-Cobos, Mayer, Michniewski, Rodan, Saccani, Kurt Sanderling, and Zubin Mehta.

From 1985 through 1990, Ilan Rogoff resided in South America where he performed frequently as a conductor. This led to his conducting debuts in the Far East, Europe, Latin America, and the USA in 1986 and with the Israel Philharmonic in the 1989/1990 season.

In 1991, Rogoff moved to Mallorca and appeared as a soloist with Spain's National Symphony Orchestra at the National Theatre and with the Radio & TV orchestra in Madrid, as well as with many orchestras in Spain.

He was known for his interpretations of the Romantic composers and had concerti dedicated to him by John McCabe and Ivan Eröd.

Of his multiple recordings, his most known is his double CD of Chopin's works composed in Mallorca, plus his recording of both Chopin Concerti arranged for piano and String Quintet with the soloists of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.

Our condolences to Mr. Rogoff's family, friends, and colleagues.
