Kaufman Music Center’s Pop-up Musical Storefront Series Returns

After a successful run last winter, the Kaufman Music Center’s (KMC) Musical Storefronts Pop-up Concerts will return to New York City.

The series became a work opportunity for over 200 artists when theaters and cultural venues remained closed due to the pandemic. With artists performing live inside empty storefronts with an amplified sound system out on the street, audience members drew up to 31,000 across the series.

The next set of concerts will be held in a transformed storefront space located at 30 Lincoln Plaza on the Northeast corner of Broadway & 62nd Street on NYC’s Upper West Side. It will involve performances of classical, jazz, the Great American Songbook, R&B, Gospel, and new music.

This year’s performers include soloists, duos, string quartets, chamber ensembles, Broadway stars, vocal ensembles, and artists who have appeared at KMC’s Merkin Hall.

The idea for the series was inspired by violinist Jay Dweck, an advisory board member of New York Alphadyne Asset Management’s Alphadyne Foundation, which fully endorsed the project, helping fund artists and production crew.

New York-based Milstein Properties will again donate the concert storefront while other supporters of the pop-up concerts include Con Edison’s Arts Al Fresco Series, the Howard Gilman Foundation, and Ether Advisory Partners.

The artists and programs will be announced gradually on KMC’s website and social media channels. Performances will take place several days a week at 11 AM, 12 PM, and 1 PM, as well as at 4 PM, 5 PM, and 6 PM.

“KMC has kept the music playing for everyone in our community,” expressed Council Member Gale A. Brewer. “The return of Musical Storefronts this winter will bring unexpected moments of joy and connection to residents on the Upper West Side. And we've never needed that more.”

“Musical Storefronts is a wonderful outlet for artists to enjoy live performing opportunities, while giving passers-by the unexpected gift of music,” said Nikki Renée Daniels, a KMC Trustee.

“KMC’s devotion to providing work for these artists, while also uplifting the community around them are just a few of the reasons I'm so proud to be a small part of the organization,” Daniels added.

Founded in 1952, KMC is NYC’s largest community arts school and complex — housing the Lucy Moses School, Special Music School, Merkin Concert Hall, and the “Face the Music” program.
