Krzysztof Urbański Named Chief Conductor of the Bern Symphony Orchestra
The Polish conductor will step into the role for the 2024/25 season
The Bern Symphony Orchestra has announced that Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbański will be its new Chief Conductor, and will step into the position at the opening of the 2024/25 season.
Urbański was Music Director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra from 2011 to 2021 and Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra from 2010 to 2017 — receiving the title of Guest Conductor of Honor at the conclusion of his term.
He has also held positions as Principal Guest Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (2012 -2016) and Principal Guest Conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra (2015–2021). In November 2022 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana.
"We were able to recruit a first-class musician for the Bern Symphony Orchestra," said Nadine Borter, the president of the Bern Theater's Board of Trustees. "This is exactly what we wanted: a very successful artist from a young generation who, with his clear musical vision, his exceptional skills and a curious, exciting program between classical and modern, will help us continue on the path we have chosen and thereby also continue to attract new audiences."
"Over the past few years, I have been able to observe with great respect the determination of the BSO to constantly develop through passionate discipline in order to grow beyond itself. The ideal partner has now been found in Krzysztof Urbański."
"I am very happy to accept this appointment and work with the Bern Symphony Orchestra on a regular basis," Urbański said. "I look forward to a fruitful collaboration with the musicians and the whole team of the BSO. During my first meeting with the orchestra, I noticed great potential and ambition. It felt like we had a strong musical connection which hopefully will develop to a wonderful relationship."
"I am also excited to experience Bern. It seems to be a beautiful and peaceful place where people are warm and kind. I hope to establish a bond with the audience by bringing diverse and interesting programs to the Casino Bern and sharing my passion for music with them."
