German-born American violinist Walter Levin has passed away – aged 92.

A graduate of The Juilliard School, where he studied with Hans Letz and Ivan Galamian, he served on faculty at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the Basel Academy of Music and the Lübeck Academy of Music – and was a founding member and 1st violinist with the LaSalle Quartet from 1947 until 1987.

His famed students included conductor James Levine, violinist Christian Tetzlaff, pianist Stefan Litwin and members of the Alban Berg Quartet and The Arditti Quartet.
