World renowned American soprano Jessye Norman has passed away from the complications of a spinal cord injury – aged 74.
A graduate of Howard University, Peabody Conservatory and the University of Michigan School of Music, Ms Norman was a former 1st prize winner at the 1969 ARD International Music Competition.
The recipient of five Grammy Awards and a prestigious Kennedy Centre Honor, she will be remembered as one of the most decorated American singers of all time.
Throughout her career she performed extensively with all of the world's top opera companies.
