LOCKDOWN COMMISSIONS | Violist Lawrence Power Presents: Garth Knox's 'Quartet for One' [NEW SERIES]

In this the second episode of 'Lockdown Commissions', Lawrence Power performs the world premiere of: ‘Quartet for One’ by violist and composer Garth Knox

British violist Lawrence Power has this month announced the launch of his new viola  project entitled: 'Lockdown Commissions' – whereby he will perform ten newly-commissioned short works for solo viola on the rooftops of iconic London music venues.

In this the second episode, Lawrence performs the world premiere of: ‘Quartet for One’ by violist and composer Garth Knox.

"The Quartet for One all happens inside the head of a viola player who imagines that he is giving a concert with his string quartet in front of a large appreciative audience ...  but he is alone on stage in an empty hall - but he really does play a quartet ... " Lawrence has this week told The Violin Channel.

"Each of the four viola strings corresponds to an instrument of the quartet ... starting with a solo for viola (on the 3rd string) he is then joined by the cello (4th string) for a duo on two strings ... then by the second violin (2nd string) for a trio on 3 strings ... and finally by the first violin (1st string, of course!) for a full quartet," he has said.

 

 

The series will include new new works by composers Huw Watkins, Cassandra Miller, William Marsey and Erkki-Sven Tüür – recorded atop venues including St John’s Smith Square, Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall and Snape Maltings.
