Lunar New Year Events Highlighted on New Platform
The new website shows 2025 Lunar New Year events from various arts organizations around the U.S. until February 11
Named “Happy Year of the Snake,” the newly launched website is an online destination point for all events around New York and other U.S. states celebrating the Lunar New Year through February 11, 2025.
Upcoming events on its calendar includes a concert by the New Jersey Symphony and conductor Xian Zhang on January 25, featuring pianist Min Kwon, tenor Michael Fabiano, the Peking University Alumni Chorus, the Starry Arts Children’s Chorus, and the Edison Chinese School Lion Dance Team.
This concert program will involve Zhang’s signature blend of music from the East and West, including works like the Spring Festival Overture and “The Red Dragonfly” alongside selections from Puccini’s Turandot and Tosca.
Also on January 25 is the sixth concert by The Sound of Spring project with the Orchestra Now ensemble led by conductor Jindong Cai at New York’s Sosnoff Theater.
Presented by the US-China Music Institute of the Bard College Conservatory of Music and China’s Central Conservatory of Music, this concert will feature erhu soloist Yan Guowei, percussionist Zhang Jingli, sheng performer Wang Lei, and pipa soloist JinOu Anastasia Dong. The same program will be presented at Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Rose Hall on January 26.
On February 11, 2025, the New York Philharmonic and conductor Tianyi Lu will present a program of works by Li Huanzhi, Unsuk Chin, Alfredo Casella, Chen Yi, and Georges Bizet at David Geffen Hall.
More events include “Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting” at David H. Koch Theater, and the free all-day Lunar New Year event at David Geffen Hall on February 1.
Happy Year of the Snake’s first concert announcement was The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Lunar New Year Celebration, which was recently led by conductor Naomi Woo on January 10. Featured artists in the concert included pipa player Zhang Hongyan, soprano Maureen Kelly, and baritone Valdis Jansons.
Among other works, the concert program involved two Philadelphia Orchestra premieres including Sisters of the Grassland for pipa and orchestra (written by various artists), and the first movement of Huang Ruo’s Folk Songs for Orchestra, titled “Flower Drum Song from Fengyang.”
“We are excited to bring you a vibrant lineup of festive events to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Snake!” Happy Year of the Snake wrote on its website. “From performances and exhibitions to handcraft workshops and fairs, explore a wide range of cultural activities and join us in celebrating the joy, culture, and traditions of this special occasion.”
