American conductor and violist Hugo Vianello has passed away – aged 92.
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and former violist with the New York Philharmonic, Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra, Minneapolis Symphony and the Oklahoma City Symphony, he later became a founding member of the Missouri Symphony Society and served as long-term music director of the Missouri Chamber Orchestra and the Missouri POPS Orchestra.
In 1987, he was instrumental in saving the historic Missouri Theatre from demolition – with the auditorium now named in his honor.
Maestro Vianello is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mrs Lucy Vianello and their four children.
Our condolences are with his family, friends, colleagues and students.
