Eduard Hanslick Birthday

Legendary German-Bohemian music critic Eduard Hanslick was born on this day in 1825.

Notoriously conservative, he was an outspoken opponent of the works of both Liszt and Wagner - and infamously, at its premiere, declared the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto put the audience "through hell ... ' with music "... which stinks to the ear".
