Musicians Named in Queen's Birthday Honors List
As part of the British honors system, the list includes renowned professionals in the music industry
Recipients are awarded for their contributions to the arts and sciences, charity and welfare groups, and public service.
Conductor, cellist and former Principal of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Julian Lloyd Webber, plus Jamaican-born contemporary music composer Eleanor Alberga were awarded an OBE — Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
Pianist Imogen Cooper was made a Dame, while songwriter Rick Wakeman was given a CBE —Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
Saxophonist Jess Gillam and Berlin Philharmonic horn-player Sarah Willis both received an MBE — Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
An MBE also went to composer and pianist Huw Watkins and opera singer Jeremy Huw Williams for their services to music and charity.
"I feel extremely touched to receive this award, especially in a year where so many people have done such incredible and selfless things," said Gillam.
"It's very unexpected and a complete surprise — I'm very grateful to all of those who have supported me and to have had the opportunity to learn an instrument in the first place. Music has changed my life and I'm passionate about sharing its magic with other people!"
