It has been announced that a previously unknown short work for viola and piano, composed by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1931, has been discovered in the Moscow State Archives.

Dated 2nd May, 1931, the 1 page viola ‘Impromptu’ Op.33 displays a dedication to Alexander Mikhailovich – long-time violist of the Glazunov Quartet.

It is understood that a number of leading experts have confirmed the authenticity of the manuscript and signature.

Along with his Viola Sonata, premiered in 1975 shortly before his death, this is only the second known piece Shostakovich composed for the instrument.
