Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid Announced Principal Conductor
The ensemble in Madrid, Spain, announced Polish conductor Marzena Diakun as their new artistic director and principal conductor
She will begin the role at the start of the 2021/2022 season, succeeding current director Victor Pablo Perez.
A graduate of the Cracow Academy of Music, Diakun was a recipient of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Conducting Fellowship at Tanglewood Music Festival and Marin Alsop's Taki Concordia Fellowship.
She is a prizewinner at the Prague Spring Competition for Conductors in Czech Republic and the Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Poland. She has led orchestras worldwide including Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Liverpool Philharmonic, and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
"The choice is the result of a selection process in which the Cultura Comunidad de Madrid has bet on a model based on equality, merit and ability," reads the Fundación Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid's Facebook. "Diakun thus becomes our future artistic director and headline of ORCAM, increasing the number of head-to-head women in the main Spanish orchestras today."
