American violin virtuoso, pedagogue and conductor Oscar Shumsky was born on this day in 1917 – 100 years ago.

Passing away in 2000, Mr Shumsky is remembered as one of the finest violinists of the 20th Century.

He held prestigious teaching positions at the Curtis Institute of Music, Peabody Conservatory of Music, Yale University and the Juilliard School.

For much of his career Mr Shumsky concertized on the 1715 ‘Ex-Pierre Rode’ Stradivarius.
