Pentatone Records has announced the release of the Los Angeles-based Calder Quartet‘s new album: Beethoven Hillborg.

The disc features Beethoven’s String Quartets No. 3 in D Major Op. 18 No. 3 and No. 14 in C Sharp Minor Op. 131 – coupled with acclaimed Swedish composer Andrers Hillborg‘s (b. 1954) Kongsgaard Variations.

”The inspiration for this album arose from our great love and admiration for Beethoven’s string quartets … as we experienced the joy of performing the complete quartets, we experienced the incredible evolution that had occurred between his first quartet and Op. 131 … ” cellist Eric Bayers has told The Violin Channel.

“The other quartet on this album is by our friend Anders Hillborg … ‘Kongsgaard Variations’ takes inspiration from a California wine which displays the Arietta theme from Beethoven’s last piano sonata Op. 111 on its label …” he has said.

”We heard a sonic relationship between the openings of ‘Kongsgaard Variations’ and Op. 18 No. 3 as well as a link to the variation movement of Op. 131, and we felt the three quartets complimented each other in a meaningful way and took the listener on a memorable journey.”
