Russian-American violin virtuoso and pedagogue Josef Gingold died on this day in 1995 – aged 85.

He is remembered as one of the most influential violin teachers of the 20th Century – his famed students including Joshua Bell, Leonidas Kavakos, Miriam Fried, Chin Kim and Jaime Laredo.
