Pianist Daniil Trifonov's New Album, "My American Story – North"

Released on Deutsche Grammophon, the album features works by John Adams, John Cage, Aaron Copland, John Corigliano, and more

Pianist Daniil Trifonov has released his newest album, My American Story – North, on Deutsche Grammophon. The album embarks on a personal musical journey across the Americas, featuring selected works ranging from jazz and swing to minimal music and popular film music. The first of a total of two albums, My American Story – North, begins in the USA. A follow-up album entitled My American Story – South, showcasing the equally rich and eclectic music of Latin America, will be released at a later date.

The album’s diverse repertoire “has given me access to many perspectives, styles, cultures, places, people, stories and forms of expression that have shaped and molded my experience of America,” shared Trifonov.

Trifonov is joined by The Philadelphia Orchestra and its Music and Artistic Director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, in George Gershwin’s Concerto in F and the world premiere of the brand-new concerto written for him by Mason Bates.

Solo pieces for piano include works by John Adams, Aaron Copland, John Corigliano, and Dave Grusin, Trifonov’s own transcription of jazz classics such as Art Tatum’s I Cover the Waterfront, Bill Evans' version of When I Fall in Love, selected pieces from Hollywood classics “The Firm” and “American Beauty” as well as John Cage’s legendary 4′33.

“I did not intend to record an anthology,” says Trifonov. “These are simply favorites of mine that speak to me on a musical level.”

Grammy Award-winning pianist Daniil Trifonov has season-long artistic residencies with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Czech Philharmonic in 2024-25. A highlight of his Chicago residency is Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto with Klaus Mäkelä, and his Czech tenure features Dvořák’s Piano Concerto with Semyon Bychkov — first at season-opening concerts in Prague and then on tour in Toronto and at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Trifonov also opens the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s season with Mozart’s 25th Piano Concerto under Andris Nelsons, performs Prokofiev’s Second with the San Francisco Symphony and Esa-Pekka Salonen, and more.

In recital, Trifonov appears twice more at Carnegie Hall, first on a solo tour that also takes place in Chicago and Philadelphia, and then with violinist Leonidas Kavakos, with whom he also appears in Chicago, Boston, Kansas City, and Washington, DC.
