Violinist Joo Young Oh and pianist Carlos Avila performing their own original arrangement for solo violin and piano of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

Originally composed by Rachmaninoff in 1934 for solo piano and symphony orchestra – to closely resemble a single movement piano concerto.

“I grew up on Paganini’s 24th Caprice and have done many improvisations and variations on it in my own time … and since joining the New York Philharmonic I’ve come to love the ‘Rach Pag’ (as pianists call it), so I thought …. why not? … we can do this!“ Joo Young has told The Violin Channel.

“We both hope that this encourages young musicians to try out ideas … no matter how crazy they might seem,“ Carlos, a Juilliard School staff pianist, has said.

Recorded live at the Sejong Chamber Hall, in Seoul – in August, 2016.
