21-year-old American cellist Gabriel Martins has been awarded 1st prize at the 2020 Schadt Cello Competition - in Allentown, Pennsylvania, United States.
A graduate of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music where he studied with Ralph Kirshbaum and current student of Laurence Lesser at the New England Conservatory, Gabriel is a former 1st prize winner at the David Popper International Cello Competition - and was last month awarded 1st prize in the Senior Division of the 2020 Sphinx Competition, in Detroit.
He will receive US $12,000 - as well as a solo concerto engagement with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra.
2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to cellists Nathan Le and Connor Kim.
The 2020 jury comprised: Diane Wittry, Richard Weiss and Jesús Castro-Balbi.
