19-year-old cellist Sterling Elliott from the United States has just minutes ago been awarded 1st prize in the Senior Division of the 2019 22nd Annual Sphinx Competition – in Detroit, United States.
A student of Joel Krosnick at The Juilliard School, Sterling will receive US $50,000 – plus a number of important performance opportunities.

Open to American Black and Latino high school and college students, the Sphinx Competition is aimed at the encouragement, development and recognition of classical music talent in the Black and Latino communities.
2nd prize in this year’s Senior Division was awarded to 21-year-old violinist Adé Williams.
3rd and 4th prizes were awarded to 26-year-old violist Caleb Georges and 24-year-old cellist Laura Andrade.

This year's US $5,000 audience prize was also awarded to Sterling Elliott.
The 2019 jury comprised: Jenny Bilfield, Kelly Hall-Tompkins, Patrice Jackson, Ani Kavafian, Jeffrey Ziegler, Edison Ruiz and Steven Tenenbom.
17-year-old American cellist Nygel Witherspoon was awarded 1st prize in this year’s Junior Division.
