The Los Angeles Philharmonic has today announced the appointment of Finnish conductor, Susanna Mälkki as their new Principal Guest Conductor – effective from the commencement of the 2017/2018 season.
She will be the first person to serve the role, since Sir Simon Rattle in 1981-1994.
‘She is one of the most gifted conductors I know, and the orchestra also loves and trusts her,’ LA Philharmonic Music and Artistic Director, Gustavo Dudamel has said.
‘It is wonderful to have such a vibrant artist as our principal guest, and I am very pleased and proud to welcome her to the LA Phil family,’ he has said.
Susanna, 47 previously served as Principal Cellist with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra – and has held Principal Conducting positions with the Ensemble InterContemporain, Gulbenkian Orchestra and Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.
